about time...
I opened up this substack when I had no idea about what either of the juxtaposed terms mean. It sounded cool, there was some sense in which it was supposed to be different than the two main, synchronic and diachronic, ways of studying languages. Maybe a synthesis of both of them, taking the best of them both. It is obvious that word meanings change and languages evolve over time, the sounds, the written word, the grammar. But, there was this overwelhming feeling about how all that can change in an instant too. It was not either this or that, there wasn’t any one process of language evolution. It was more holistic, it was dynamic, it was blooming, it was lacking, it was beating, it was beautiful and ruthless too.
It was just an idea, let me find the best blogging platform, one which will not own my content. A whismy, on which I was not afraid to act. It was the last year of my undergraduate and I had spend the last year wondering about languages and money. How it at times felt I was losing the first and how I did not want to earn the second, I didn’t feel ready to earn. I wanted be more disciplined and diligent towards my reading and learning. I have done just that for the last 3 years. Two MAs, endless classes, discussions, living independently-though still not earning as much lol.
I thought I will come up with a grand theory of this evolution, of the power invested in words. Not really. But I have views on a few of the debates and I think at my own pace and time I will talk about developments in this area.
Thank you for everyone who has followed this substack organically, I shall post something time to time. No promises. 🤞🕺🕺🤓🤘🫶
